A Report On The Practice Of Chinese-English Translation Of Campus News From The Perspective Of Functionality Plus Loyalty

With the development of world economic integration and promotion of reform and opening up,China is entering the global stage in a more active attitude.Under the background of the change,universities in China have enhanced their publicity and communication actively with the world.Serving as a major way for the outside world to learn about Chinese universities,campus news has received its increasing attention of universities.Character news is regarded as a type of campus news.It aims to promote collective justice,culture and traditions in an aim to establish an excellent collective image by publicizing outstanding models among staffs of universities.Entrusted by the News Media Center of Tianjin University,the author has completed three ChineseEnglish translations of character news.In the process of translation practice,the difficulties encountered by the author mainly focus on the artistic and literary expression of the characters,as well as the translation of the key words and sentences that convey the thoughts and emotions of the characters.In order to convey the features of the characters accurately in the text,and meet the needs of the target readers and the authors,so as to achieve good effect of publicity and recommendation of Tianjin University and the characters,the translation must fully convey the meaning of the original text,and reflect the profound connotation which it goes to convey to the readers as well.Therefore,the author chooses the principle of Functionality plus Loyalty by Christiane Nord as the guide,by taking free translation as the main strategy,which is supplemented by translation methods such as meaning interpretation,meaning conversion,modification of aphorisms,addition and subtraction.Besides,it explores the optimal combination of the principle and the practice,and takes into account the expectations of all parties on the basis of ensuring the faithfulness of the translation,so as to obtain a high-quality translation.This translation report consists of four chapters,including Description of Translation Mission,Description of Translation Process,Case Analysis and Summary of Translation Practice.Through this translation practice,the author has realized the important guiding significance of the Functionality plus Loyalty principle to the translation of character texts,and also acquired the methods and experience of handling such translation under the guidance of this principle.This translation practice not only deepens the author’s understanding of the principle but also improves the author’s ability to cope with the campus character news translation.Based on this translation practice report,the author hopes to provide reference and inspiration to the translation work of campus news.
