“Pull guard” “Armlock” “To shrimp”.If you have never entered a Jiu-Jitsu dojo nor stepped foot on a Jiu-Jitsu mat, these expressions may be a little difficult to understand. As Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu develops all around the world,Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Terminology has gradually become familiar among Martial Arts enthusiasts. As a relatively new combat sport,Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seems to have found its own development path in the past ten years. It has crossed the sea and made its way from South America to the most populous country in the world: China.Modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu now steps foot into the home of traditional martial arts and gradually integrates into one of the world’s oldest language systems: Chinese.Chinese and Portuguese belong to two completely different language systems. In most aspects such as speech system, word formation, semantics and sentencing structure, the differences are far greater than the similarities. However, when two different cultures are found in a same area of interest, their Language meet in the field of Terminology and we are able to identify points of association between different languages. The present research is guided by relevant theories in the fields of Modern Linguistics,Comparative Linguistics,Terminology and Translation studies, and targets the Chinese Translation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Terminology. After a thorough investigation and compilation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu terms, the present thesis details the characteristics of its system, with the purpose of conducting a comparative analyzes of its original Language terms and its Chinese translation, and finally suggests ways to improve the Chinese translation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu terms. The thesis is divided into five chapters:The first chapter confirms the necessity of the research on the Chinese translation of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu terms,by analyzing its origin and significance, introducing the research thoughts and methods,as well as explains the basic theories, sources and innovating aspects of the research. The second chapter gives a brief introduction of the origins of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and its development in Brazil and abroad, then systematizes the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Terminology by detailing its structure.Chapters 3,4 and 5 are the core of this research:Chapter three analyzes the language characteristics of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu terms by distinguishing its peculiarities and analyzing its basic formation aspects.Chapter four starts describing the language characteristics and the translation methods of Chinese Brazilian Jiu-jitsu terms, then later compiles and compares the Chinese and Portuguese Terms.Chapter five compares the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Terminology in its original form with its Chinese translation, first by analyzing its characteristics in correspondence to the Chinese translation methods, then analyzing the similarities and differences between the two languages, and finally evaluating the Chinese translation of some specific Brazilian Jiu-jitsu terms. The last part is the conclusion.Translation Studies are intimately related to Comparative Linguistics. The source language of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu terms is Brazilian Portuguese, which has its own Language peculiarities. However, after being translated into Chinese,Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Terms will also be influenced by this Language own characteristics. Therefore, studying the Chinese translation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu terms not only helps to further understand the relationship between the two languages, but also has great practical applicability for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners whose native language is Brazilian Portuguese but who also have the need or desire to learn Chinese as a second Language. After training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a Chinese environment for over 4 years, the author has actively researched the Chinese translation of this combat sport terminology from the Comparative Linguistic perspective. Not only has the author learned the basic techniques of BJJ but has also collected and summarized Portuguese and Chinese Brazilian Jiu-jitsu terms. This paper not only gives to readers a basic understanding of the cultural differences and similarities between Brazilian Portuguese and Chinese,it is also of great significance and applicability in promoting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Terminology. As a Brazilian Portuguese native speaker who is currently studying Chinese as a second Language,a student of Masters in Modern Linguistics,as well as a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner, the author has knowledge and experience in all these three fields, which gives a clear and undoubtable motivation to research this content. While China and Brazil’s Jiu-jitsu relations deepens, how to exchange content and information about its terminology as well as how to understand the interaction between the sports Language and Culture has become a realistic research field and its necessity is even more clear. The author believes it to be a personal responsibility to do research on this matter and looks forward to achieving satisfactory results.
