The translation project is selected from the four texts of the sixth part,“Technology Platforms for Skills Gaps Bridging,Career Counseling, and Guidance”of Anticipating and Preparing for Emerging Skills and Jobs(Brajesh Panth and Rupert Maclean,2020)published by Asian Development Bank.Based on Industry 4.0,the source text offered suggestions about school education and vocational training in Asia from the examples of Philippines,Singapore and South Korea. The source text is an informative text with explicit logic, abundant information and long sentences.Based on the standard of more than 20 words, the distribution and characteristics of the long sentences in the source text were counted and studied. In view of this, the translation report takes communicative translation theory as guidance and analyzes the translation methods and skills of long sentences by the four sentence translation methods, respectively inversion, division, transforming into the sentence and changing the voice.Inversion means changing the order of the words according to the reading habits of the target readers to make the sentences fluent and it can be finished by changing the order of subject and attributive clauses.Division means dividing a complex sentence into a few parts and then translating it into several sentences. The coordinated constituents and the adverbials can be separated. The words or phrases can be translated into sentences if they are subjects or inserted parts. The voice of the source text can be changed by changing the order of words or adding a subject.Based on the difference between English and Chinese, the translation practice enhances the translator’s ability to translate long sentences as well as deepens the understanding of communicative translation theory. It is wished that the translation project will serve as a reference for other translators working with long sentence translation of informative texts and will also offer information about the skills training and education platforms. |
