This thesis is based on the author's translation practice.The source language text is from Agriculture in the United States:a documentary history by Wayne D.Rasmussen who serviced for United States Department of Agriculture.Rich in its content,this book depicts the development of the agriculture in the United States from different perspectives in detail.It has been a long time since China and America began to exchange between each other in the agricultural sector.As China is a big agricultural country,to understand the history of agriculture in America is helpful for the exchanges and understanding between China and America in the agricultural sector.The source language text features in its rich content of history and history document,depicting the development and changes of agriculture in the US.The source language text thus belongs to the informative text.According to the style of the source language text,the author's translation practice of the source text is under the guidance of Peter Newmark's communicative translation.Based on the translation practice,this thesis discusses the translation skills of history texts from the perspective of communicative translation theory.The understanding and expressing of proper nouns,abstract nouns and long sentences are the difficult points during the process of this translation practice.The main purposes of history textbooks are to record and communicate the history information.The author tried to make the translation easy to understand for Chinese readers by taking the translation skills including extending the meaning of the words,adjust the logical sequence of the sentences,addressing the conveying of the information of the source text under the guidance of communicative translation theory.
