| Guided by functional equivalence theory, this translation practice focuses on the textual cohesion and coherence in the translation of business texts with the first two chapters of Debt101 as translation materials.By comparing the differences in the use of cohesive devices between English and Chinese, the translator proposes two strategies to cope with the translation of English business texts based on the review and analysis of the initial translation. The first strategy is flexible handling of the cohesive devices in the source text.Specifically, regarding the source text that contains reference cohesion, substitution cohesion or lexical cohesion, cohesive devices, such as lexical reiteration and ellipsis, are used in the target text to make it align with the habitual expression of the target language.Concerning the source text with implicit or explicit cohesion, cohesive devices, like hiding the explicit cohesion and clarifying the implicit cohesion, are adopted in the target text to make it semantically coherent. The second strategy is the reconstruction of the source text conforming to the logic of the target language.Specific translation techniques adopted to reproduce coherence in the target text include: coherence reconstruction by adding hidden information, coherence reconstruction by omitting redundant message, and coherence reconstruction by changing orders of sentences. The writing of the translation practice report deepens the author’s understanding of business English translation strategies. The author hopes that this practice report can provide reference for translation work in related fields. |
