Narrative Research Of Agnès Varda’s Feature Film

As a female director who grew up from the New Wave(in French,La Nouvelle Vague),Agnès Varda was deeply influenced by the creative concepts of “author’s film” and “writer’s film”,leaving many creative works of art to the world.Although Varda later focused on documentaries,his feature films have become a valuable chapter in the history of French cinema.Varda has created many new forms and concepts of film narrative,she is good at revealing the deep emotions and connotations contained in them from under the coat of subtle things,and is good at expressing delicate psychological emotions with highly internalized text narration,and the characters created are perfectly combined with the surrounding environment to form a unique visual art effect.At the same time,as a female director,Varda is committed to paying attention to the survival of women,persistently expressing the real situation and spiritual world of women,and creating many female images who have the courage to break through the shackles of life and forge ahead on the road of pursuing themselves.Varda’s film practice has also inspired many women to devote themselves to the film industry and express their true hearts to the outside world.This thesis consists of an introduction,four chapters,and an epilogue.The introduction part first introduces the research background and research significance,sorts out the research status of Agnès Varda’s films at home and abroad,and finally introduces the main research content and research methods.The first chapter addresses the narrative themes in Varda’s feature films,including the existential crisis of man,the inner struggle of the self,and the situation of women,all of which point to the humanistic caring nature of his films;The second chapter focuses on the strategy of narrative text in Varda’s films,whether it is the discussion of subjective time and objective time in narrative time,the subjective intervention of narrative space,or the structural setting of double lines and multiple threads,which make Varda’s feature films more innovative in narrative;The third chapter mainly argues for the poetic style of Varda’s feature films,the use of long shots,the expressive color composition and the ingenious composition techniques all stem from Varda’s strong desire to express and are also the poetic presentation of her rich emotions.Chapter 4 mainly explores the reasons for the narrative characteristics of Varda’s feature films,places them in French New Wave films for investigation and analysis,and further explores the gains and losses of artistic expression of his feature films.
