Translation Policy in the United Kingdom is a doctoral thesis written by Gabriel González Nú?ez,which explores the relevant writings of selected scholars on linguistic minorities within the fields of law, political science and translation studies by conducting an interdisciplinary literature review, and elaborates the translation policies in local government, health care institutions and the judiciary in the UK by exploring the translation obligations under international law, particularly European international law.Academic texts are rigorous and scientific, which requires the translators to have an understanding of the academic issues involved in the text,or to take a rigorous attitude to conduct research. In the process of translating academic texts, the translators should not only accurately convey the information of the original text, but also consider the reader’s acceptance.Translation Policy in the United Kingdom with a number of the names of laws and legal related vocabulary, and long sentences and sentences with passive voice,is logically rigorous. The key and difficult points are to make the accuracy and coherence. Therefore,in the translation of the text, under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative theory, the author adopted various translation methods to achieve communicative effects. The report begins with an analysis of the features of the original text, analyses the basic principles of Newmark’s communicative translation theory, and discusses the process of translation practice with specific cases at three levels: 1)at the lexical level, understanding the characteristics of the Anglo-American legal system and paying attention to the use of common words in the professional context to achieve accurate transmission of information;2)at the syntactic level,by splitting and recasting, and changing the sequence of the sentences to keep close to the expression habits of the target readers to improve acceptability of the information;3)at the textual level,by using methods, such as combining sentences and adjusting the order of words,to ensure the fluency of the translation,so as to guarantee the overall quality of the translation. As a trial and practice of the translation of academic texts,Translation Policy in the United Kingdom is expected to provide some lessons for the translation of texts in the same type.
