| This report is based on a liaison interpretation task of an online insurance consultation. In this assignment, the interpreter provided interpreting services for a foreign teacher working in China.During this period, the interpreter was responsible for interpreting the insurance broker’s explanation into English and the client’s questions into Chinese,in order to facilitate communication between the two sides and achieve the purpose of purchasing insurance policy. The online insurance consultation was divided into two parts: firstly, the detailed interpretation of the insurance plan;secondly, the Q&A session. The relevant documents involved in the first part, the insurance plan, were sent to the interpreter in advance by the insurance agent in Chinese version, and after being translated into English, they were sent to the client as a reference before the start of this online task. This interpreting task includes a lot of professional knowledge and specialized terms in the insurance field, which is a huge challenge for the interpreter. In this process, the communication between the three parties was relatively smooth, and the task was completed successfully. The client was satisfied with the interpreter’s service. After the review and reflection of the record, based on text type of this task, the interpreter finds that the original text is informative text and there are some problems in this task. For example, the author failed to completely express the whole coverage of some clauses and accurately interpret few claim conditions. All of these problems violate the “truth” principle of informational text translation. The interpreter proposes methods for informative texts interpretation that are applicable to this assignment, such as prediction, coordination, generalization, and modification. |
