A Study On Strategies Applied In Chinese-to-English Simultaneous Interpreting With Text Guided By Economy Principle

Economy principle focuses on simplicity of language,including a series of ideas like “the speaker’s economy” and “the auditor’s economy” which are conducive to help interpreters deliver necessary information within limited time.Strict time constraint,intensive information and cognitive load of multitask processing pose severe challenges to simultaneous interpreters.Therefore,comprehension of economy principle can help interpreters achieve better interpreting effect.Application of economy principle falls into four categories: syntactic linearity,compression,omission and supplementation.The author conducts an empirical study to verify and supplement previous study results,hoping to provide suggestions for follow-up research.This study takes 16 students majoring in English interpreting in Shandong Jianzhu University and Shandong University as subjects,and adopts quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis to explore the correlation of the use of economy principle with the interpreting quality in Chinese-toEnglish simultaneous interpreting with text and discover the influence of different strategies on interpreting quality.Quantitative analysis means to require subjects to do a mock interpreting test and record the whole process according to the table of Strategy Frequency and the table of Interpreting Quality Assessment(IQA).After that,statistical tool SPSS is operated to carry out the correlation analysis and regression analysis.Qualitative analysis refers to use the content analysis and interviews to further explain and supplement study results.The results show that the use of economy principle has a high positive correlation with interpreting quality,that among the four categories of economy principle,syntactic linearity and compression have a significant influence on interpreting quality,and that although the correlation between interpreting quality and omission,and supplementation is not obvious,use of proper strategies helps improving interpreting quality.
