| As an emerging form,media simultaneous interpreting is no longer confined to television with the advent of the information era,presenting major events to the audience worldwide via the Internet and smart gadgets.Given its unique working conditions and stringent standards,it is challenging,even for seasoned interpreters.This study aims to probe the performance and strategies of media simultaneous interpreting under Grice's Cooperative Principle.The thesis begins with a literature review that combs through the defining features of media interpreting and the works on quality assessment of interpreting.In the theoretical framework that follows,the thesis discusses how the four attendant maxims of quantity,quality,relation,and manner work in communication,as well as how they may be breached,hampering interaction or generating an implicature.After that,the principle is applied to the study of interpreting in a broadcasting setting.In case study,a set of quality criteria under the guidance of the Cooperative Principle is presented.Based on an analysis of Donald Trump's Inaugural Address,a range of examples are extracted for comprehensive illustrations by comparing the source speech and the two parallel transcripts.The object is to examine whether the interpreters have observed the maxims,and to evaluate their performances.Findings show that observance and nonobservance of the principle and the four maxims prevail in media simultaneous interpreting.While obeying the maxims can assure the overall quality,nonfulfillment of them does not necessarily lead to poor performance in all the situations.Considering the unfavourable working conditions,uncertainties of working time and subjects,nonobservance is hard to avoid,and can even function as strategies in the face of emergencies.Therefore,some coping tactics are proposed at the end of the paper in the hope of improving the quality of media simultaneous interpreting. |
