In recent years, with the prevalence of multimedia and the popularization of smart devices,China has entered the era of the Internet in an all-around way.Various application scenarios have further increased the demand for digital Chinese fonts. The transformation of digital technology has an important impact on the methods, concepts, and aesthetics of Chinese font design.Revival fonts have attracted more and more attention because of their unique visual performance and ideal visual effect.Font designers are combining Chinese traditional calligraphy art with digital technology to create Chinese fonts both functional and aesthetic in terms of the screen display. The study selected Yi Bingshou’s clerical script as the research object and took the Chinese revival font design as the entry point.First, this study examined the evolution of Chinese font reproduction from a historical perspective. In the field of design disciplines, three methods of“qualitative research”,“quantitative research” and “case analysis” were used in the study to analyze Yi Bingshou’s clerical script. Then, this study introduced the theory of abstract art and combined the three elements of plane composition with Chinese traditional calligraphy art.The three aspects of “point”,“line” and “surface” corresponding to “stroke”,“structure”,and“composition” analyzes the glyphs characteristics of its calligraphy style form. Finally, this research uses the four basic theories of font design: “size and visual center of gravity”,“yinyang and weight”,“optical illusion and direction”,and “grayscale and space” to create a new typeface— “Yi Tingzhou’s sans-serif clerical script”,which based on Yi Bingshou’s clerical script. It discussed the relationship between Chinese traditional calligraphy art and digital typeface design and summarized new methods for typeface re-design.
