The British aesthete and art critic Clive Bell published his influential book Art in 1914 and made the famous proposition that the fundamental nature of a work of art is“meaningful form”.Many Western scholars consider this definition to be the most satisfactory definition of art to date. This definition of art focuses on "form" and emphasizes the first importance of form. This paper explores the three aspects of the formal language of painting: color, shape, and composition, and applies them to this creative practice. In the first part, the concept and meaning of the formal language of painting are briefly explained. In the second part,we analyze and study the contrast of color, warm and cold, realistic shape and spatial composition in the formal language with the help of individual works by Xin Dongwang,Luo Zhongli and Vermeer. In the third part,we will combine the theoretical research and our thoughts with the creative practice to find our own formal language and lay a good foundation for our future creation.
