This paper is a translation report on translation practice. The translated material is selected from a book,Translation and Cognition, written by Gregory Shreve together with Eric Angelone. The book was published by John Benjamin Company in 2010 and has not yet been translated into Chinese. The book focuses on translation research and is divided into three parts according to its content: first, methodological innovation;second, research design;and third, the integration of translation process research with cognitive science. The translated material selected by the translator comes from the second part, which is related to research design. Two articles give suggestions for standardizing the research paradigm of cognitive translation science and the experimental criteria of translation research from theoretical and practical perspectives, respectively. The text,as an informative text, presents ideas in a rigorous and objective way with clear logic, but the translation of the text is challenging due to the characteristics of the source language. For the translation of this text, the translator adopts Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theories as support to translate the text and deal with the problems encountered in the process.Empirical research,as an important part of scientific research, can increase the depth of scientific research. Therefore, the translation of this text can provide help for empirical research on translation and can provide new ideas for later empirical research on cognitive translation studies, excluding some minefields to some extent.Second,it can provide valuable reading content for readers who are interested in translation science and cognitive science,as well as in the development of cognitive translation science. What needs to be mentioned is that the translation of terms is unique because of its textual characteristics, and the application of Newmark’s translation theory in turn can trigger new thinking-from the perspective of cognitive translation,is it possible to understand Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation in terms of cognitive processes.
