A Contrastive Analysis Approach To E-C Translation Of Adverbs

In recent years,the frequent occurrence of extreme weather events and natural disasters has sounded the alarm of the climate crisis.Against this backdrop,Under the Sky We Make:How to be Human in a Warming World,a popular science book focusing on climate change,has manifested its value.The author of the book,Dr.Kimberley Nicholas,not only provides readers with a detailed overview of the hazards of global warming but also proposes action plans to mitigate climate change,making the book a highly valuable resource for readers.Therefore,it is worth translating and introducing to readers in China.The source text of the translation task is the first four chapters of the book.During the practice,it became apparent that English adverbs are not only flexible in their positions but also diverse in meanings.Moreover,contextual changes can endow them with emotional and informational functions,making their translation a challenging task.Failure to use appropriate translation methods can significantly affect the fluency and accuracy of the target text.Therefore,the similarities and differences between English and Chinese adverbs,in the process of translation,are first analyzed from three aspects: syntactic distribution,grammatical function,and semantic features.On the basis of such a contrast,some methods are adopted in translating respectively adjunct adverbs,disjunct adverbs,and conjunct adverbs from the source text,and these translation methods are further summarized here.This report consists of six chapters.The first chapter provides an introduction to the source text and notes the significance of the report.Chapter Two details the three stages of the translation process.Chapter Three provides an overview of the previous studies on adverb translation conducted both domestically and internationally.Chapter Four involves the definition and classification of English and Chinese adverbs,and offers a contrast between them.Chapter Five presents eight translation methods for adverbs and provides detailed examples to illustrate each method,including reordering,conversion,combination,division,amplification,diction,omission and synthetic translation.The final chapter summarizes the findings and limitations of this report.
