Bai Jiao’s Calligraphy And Its Influence-and Its Implications For My Own Creation Contents

Bai Jiao(1907-1969)was a master of poetry,calligraphy,painting and printing,with the most notable achievements in cursive script,and was one of the great generals of the20th-century revival of the school of calligraphy,as well as one of the most representative calligraphers of the Hai School.This paper gives a brief account of Bai Jiao’s life and describes his friendship with Deng Sanmu,Xu Beihong,and Lai Chusheng and others.Bai Jiao is a stalwart in the revival of the science of calligraphy,he practiced and promoted the development of calligraphy.At the same time,the photography and printing technology in the 20 th century provided a technical foundation for the revival of calligraphy.In the calligraphy art of Baijiao,his achievements are concentrated in cursive and regular script,and it is believed that in his early years,he followed the example of Ouyang Xun and Yu Gong because they were the best transitional choices for tracing back to the Wei and Jin Dynasties;after having a certain foundation,he learned small regular script from Zhong Yao,and learned cursive script from Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi,all of which made certain achievements;in the later period,he developed the style of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi to a certain height,and produced the representative works such as Lanting Miscellaneous,which are free and loose,with a graceful and sophisticated style.Bai Jiao has a theory of calligraphy that has been handed down to the world,and the core of his calligraphic thought is the ‘ theory of the essence of the caliiigraphy’,which analyses the realm of calligraphy in terms of the state of mind,temperament,charm and smell;in Bai Jiao’s theory of brushwork,he emphasizes the style,flavor,and interest of writing,grasping the essence of Wei and Jin brushwork;Bai Jiao’s view of a rubbing from a stone inscription is leading the times,and he advocates the fusion of the two to complement each other.Bai Jiao’s cursive script is direct from the Wei and Jin dynasties,and there is a large body of writing on calligraphy that has come down to us today and whose success has inspired today’s world of calligraphy.Finally,on the basis of the analysis of Bai Jiao’s works,in-depth copying is carried out to learn the characteristics of Bai Jiao’s calligraphic forms and style,and to combine them with his calligraphic ideas in order to develop my own calligraphic style and provide new ideas and directions for future copying and creation.
