E-C Translation Strategies Of Cohesive Devices

This translation report is based on the translation of the first two chapters of Literary Translator Studies.This book mainly introduces some translators,the research methods of translator studies and the studies of translation behaviors of literary translators.As an informative text,the book is rigorous in logic and complex in sentence structures with a lot of technical terminologies,cohesive words and parentheses.As for cohesive devices,the source text contains a lot of conjunctions,pronouns,references and ellipses.As a result,it is difficult to understand and translate the cohesive devices accurately and make clear of the logical relationship between sentences.Cohesion means the correlation of the words and grammar in a text.By means of cohesive devices,two or more elements within a text are related to each other in meaning.According to Halliday & Hasan,the cohesive devices are mainly divided into two categories: lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion.In this translation practice,different translation methods,such as omission,literal translation,repetition,and free translation have been used to deal with the cohesive devices in the source text so as to make the translation as smooth and natural as possible.This paper finally summarizes the translation strategies of handling different cohesive devices,aiming at providing some references for the translation of the same text type.This report first introduces the background and significance of the translation practice.Then Chapter Two elaborates on the process of this translation practice,including the preparation for the translation,the translation process and the post-translation proofreading.The third chapter introduces the theoretical basis of this paper based on the previous studies.The fourth chapter is a case study,which analyzes the translation strategies in this translation task.The last chapter summarizes the gains and limitations of this translation practice.
