Cohesive Devices In Technical Texts And Translation

In the area of natural science,there still exists a great gap between China and developed countries.Almost all the Nobel prizes in the category of natural science go to western developed countries.There is still a long way to go for China to get rid of the cultural backwardness.In order to do so,China should first draw on the experience and academic achievements of the western countries.The introduction of the natural science textbooks from western countries to China is therefore an effective way to achieve this goal.From the view of the literary style,the language of the natural science textbooks belong to the technical English texts.This program chooses chemistry textbook from McGraw Hill Education company for high school students in America as the translation material for the use of editing bilingual textbook,reference book for international high school in China and for lower grades of university.The language of technical text has a clear logical structure with its sentences tied together closely in which some different cohesive devices are applied.For example,personal pronouns,demonstrative pronouns,repetition,ellipse,transition and so on are all cohesive devices,and they exist in almost every sentence.Sometimes,there are multiple cohesive devices in just one single sentence.It comes as a result that the study of the translation strategies on cohesive devices is not merely an academic issue,it's more of a practical one,bearing universal referential meanings to the relevant translation process.During translation,how to deal with these cohesive devices in order to reappear the style,language and logic of the original text so as to achieve equivalence is an issue that worth study.The most systematic explanation on cohesion theory comes from American linguist M.A.K.Halliday and R·Hasan.With the guidance of their theory,the translator analyses the diverse cohesive devices in the translation material and compared two versions of translation of each sentence example in an aim to find out the most precise translation.Second,logic analysis is applied to decode the original text and then combined with cohesive analysis in order to present the translation in a clear logic frame.The study methods used in research are reading thesis and discussion on the translation strategy.The thesis summarizes the translation methods for cohesive devices in technical English with the combination of logic analysis,and makes comparison between two different translation versions so as to provide reference for the translation of technical text.
