A Report On E-C Translation Of Ecological Literature And The Critique Of Anthropocentrism (Introduction)

The source text is the introduction part excerpted from Bryan L.Moore’s Ecological Literature and the Critique of Anthropocentrism.Based on the stylistic analysis of the source text,formal and professional terms,long and difficult sentences,quotations by scholars in different fields are the major difficulties in this translation.Under the guidance of “Translation Compensation Theory,” some strategies are employed during the translation process,which deserves a thorough summary and a careful analysis.This report aims to provide some translation strategies for the E-C translation of academic English writings.Xia Tingde’s Translation Compensation Theory highlights that translation compensation mainly focuses on the repair of the potential or occurred loss in the translation which is based on the type of text and the purpose of translation.This report mainly researches the compensation of the translation from the points of lexical level and grammatical level.Terms of place names,academic terms and so on are mainly discussed in the lexical level.For example,in translating a strange place name,the strategy of amplification can be used to explain;it is also possible to use the strategy of generalization to generalize the redundant elements in the target language.For foreign languages other than source language and target language,annotations can be used to facilitate readers’ understanding.And annotations can also be divided into annotation outside text and annotation inside text.In the grammatical level,long and difficult sentences are taken as examples to analyze the difficulties in them,such as passive meaning,plural meaning,adverbs of time and particles,and so compensation with a different device is adopted to achieve compensation in translation.In this practice of translating,the translator has made a preliminary attempt to deal with translation troubles in ecocriticism texts with Translation Compensation Theory,and gained a further comprehension of this theory.It is also hoped that the practice can supply assistance to the translation and research of relevant texts.
