| A Brief History of Translation in China and the West is one of the important textbooks in the field of translation discipline. It provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of the three major stages of Chinese-Western translation history, significant translation events, and typical representative figures. Not only can this book help learners of translation have an overview of the development of Chinese-Western translation history, also enable them to recognize the advent of the establishment of Translation Studies. The present translation report takes the seventh chapter of this book-Translation and Knowledge Transmission: Translation of Chinese Scientific and Technological Literature,as the source text. The original chapter systematically introduces the overall situation of Chinese scientific and technological literature translation and the positive impact it has had, focusing on two time points, ancient times and the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. The source text is of historical and documentary characteristics. At the lexical level, there are many culture-loaded words and scientific terminology, and at the syntactic level, there are many complex sentences with intricate syntactic structures. At the textual level, the logical relationships within the context are not clear. In order to address the above translation difficulties, this translation report, based on the Skopos theory, adopts literal translation plus annotation to deal with culture-loaded words and scientific terminology in order to help target readers reduce or eliminate cultural barriers. For subject-absent sentences in the source text, the translator utilizes such translation techniques as restructuring and conversion to make the translation conform to the writing habits of the English readers and produce more readable version. For the Chinese paratactic sentences, the translator adds logical connectives in the inter-clause relations to make the target text logically clearer and more comprehensible to the English readers. In summary,Skopos theory exerts a strong guiding role in the translation of the similar texts, effectively achieving the communicative purpose of the translated text. However, certain limitations in this report still need to be desired. |
