This report is based on the English translation of Communication between China and the West, which is part of the 2020 Chinese Academic Translation Project of the National Social Science Fund of China. The book is based on the exchange between"Chinese learning" and "Western learning" in the context of cultural exchange between China and foreign countries,to grasp the tone of the intellectual transformation of modern China.Communication between China and the West is an informative text. The main difficulties encountered in the process of translation include a large number of proper names and culture-loaded words, long sentences, and classical Chinese.Skopos theory believes that all translation actions have a purpose and that the purpose of translation determines translation techniques and strategies. There are three main principles of the Skopos theory, namely the Skopos rule, the coherence rule, and the rule of fidelity. The translator’s work is divided into pre-translation,translation and posttranslation. Before translation, the translator first analyses the characteristics of the source text and chooses the skopos theory as the theoretical framework.During the translation process, the author used some of the tools. Then, the translator did some proofreading after the translation.Based on translation practice, the report uses the three principles of skopos theory as a guide, and carries out analysis at both lexical and syntactic levels, using translation strategies such as literal translation, free translation, transliteration+annotation, and splitting in order to achieve the aim of this paper’s translation.Using the three principles of skopos theory to study the translation of informative texts on historical topics,it is hoped that this will guide translators to use the right translation strategies according to the purpose when translating the same text type.
