| The geographical identity of Su Tong’s novels has always been very distinctive, and he takes the Jiangnan region where he lives as the background of his creation(mainly Suzhou and Nanjing),building a unique world of Jiangnan in his novels. This paper takes the writing of Jiangnan in Su Tong’s novels as the object of study, examines the unique features of the image of Jiangnan in Su Tong’s novels, and provides as comprehensive an interpretation as possible of the meaning of Su Tong’s "Jiangnan world".The thesis is divided into three parts: the introduction, the body and the conclusion. The introductory part of the thesis is devoted to a description of the relevant concepts of "Jiangnan geography" and "Jiangnan culture",as well as to a description of the current state of research and research ideas on the topic. The main text is divided into four chapters: Chapter 1examines the external appearance of "Jiangnan" in the novel. In terms of the natural landscape, the novel presents a decaying and gloomy picture of the waterfront;in terms of the living landscape, the villages and cities of Jiangnan show the reality of decay and degradation respectively. The second chapter explores the characters of Jiangnan in the novel.Su Tong builds up a rich spiritual connotation of Jiangnan through his writing on life patterns and human alienation. The portrayal of women reinforces the femininity of Jiangnan,as they are soft on the outside and rigid on the inside, sinking into degradation and falling in love with each other;the portrayal of teenagers highlights the wild spirit of Jiangnan,as they generally behave irrationally with violent obsessions and desires;and the portrayal of escapees highlights the intellectual character of Jiangnan, showing the transcendent spirit of Jiangnan, which is different from the practical, political and ethical culture of the north. The third chapter examines the novel’s artistic presentation of Jiangnan’s poetic aesthetic qualities. The imagery structure presents the image of Jiangnan, creating a classical Jiangnan of ebullience and sentimentality through traditional imagery, and a strange Jiangnan of beauty and evil through new and encompassing imagery;the narrative approach confronts the world of Jiangnan, using interlocking narrative perspectives and complex temporal structures to see the customs and customs of Jiangnan’s water towns and life in all its forms;the language rhetoric, with its harmonious and paradoxical linguistic tensions, constitutes the dynamic poetry of Jiangnan writing. The fourth chapter explores the causes and values of "Jiangnan writing" in Su Tong’s novels.Su Tong’s book on Jiangnan is deeply involved in the emergence and development of the pioneering literary trend in the 1980 s,and his imaginative writing on the countryside has expanded the path of traditional novels on the subject, which has both literary and aesthetic values. The concluding section makes a concluding statement on the writing of Jiangnan in Su Tong’s novels. At the intersection of tradition and modernity,Su Tong’s Jiangnan writing restores a vivid and miscellaneous original Jiangnan,in which there is classical beauty and intellectual transcendence,as well as the gloomy gloom of degradation, decay and decadence. The "Jiangnan" in the novel is the author’s own understanding of life and existence,a spiritual home for literature built by Su Tong. |
