| This report is based on the practice of translating Chapter Six of An Illustrated Introduction to Qi Culture.This chapter narrates in modern Chinese and cites a large number of ancient Chinese classics,presenting the characteristics of an informative text with a vocative function.The content involves multiple social fields such as politics,economy,military,culture,and so on.Based on the language features of the source text,the report explores how to apply relevant translation methods and skills to tackle translation difficulties from the perspective of hermeneutics.It is found that to understand and interpret the semantic meanings of historical texts,it is necessary to insight into the hidden context to accurately understand the semantics the author intends to convey.In the meanwhile,it is necessary to consider the preconceived notions of English readers and merge the author’s horizon with that of the target readers to ensure readability of the target text.For the condensed language in ancient Chinese text and the repetitive expressions and unnecessary modifiers in modern Chinese text,translation skills such as addition,omission and combination should be adopted to make the translation concise and accurate.When translating complex and lengthy sentences,the logical relationship within the sentence should be clarified,and shift skill should be used to facilitate the flow of information in the target text.For culture-loaded words,a combination of transliteration and free translation can be used to accurately convey the original meaning while retaining the unique beauty of the source language.Flexible adaptation and compensation should be employed to ensure accuracy when faced with semantic imbalance caused by cultural differences and the openness of interpretation in classical Chinese texts.The report further enriches the applied research on the English translation of mixed texts of modern Chinese and ancient classical Chinese from the perspective of hermeneutics,and it is hoped that the report will be helpful for the English translation of similar texts. |
