An E-C Translation Report On Chapter Eleven To Fourteen Of Byzantine Silk On The Silk Roads

Byzantine silk on the Silk Roads,a popular science literature in textile co-authored by experts and scholars in textile field,describes the development of silk in the Byzantine Empire and those countries’ cultures alongside the ancient Silk Road.This translation practice report is excerpted from chapter 11 to 14 of the original book.It summarizes the translation obstacles and strategies with cases like prehistoric animals’ patterns of the silk brocade,myth,the professional vocabulary of textile technology and loanwords etc.To satisfy readers’ expectations for original authors,the translator translates the information related with Byzantine silk and conveys its cultural features under the guidance of “Chesterman’s translation norms theory” from four dimensions,namely the expectation norm,the accountability norm,the communication norm and the relation norm.In addition,considering the differences between Chinese and English sentences,the translator adopts the strategies of “sentence structure adjustments”,“visibility adjustments”and “cohesion adjustments” to display the “explicitness” tactic used in the source text with accurate expressions.Through this translation practice,the translator has reached a deeper understanding of textile industry,which can promote the silk culture for the “Belt and Road Initiative” and contribute researches on related issues.
