A Report On The English To Chinese Translation Of Byzantine Silk On The Silk Roads(Chapter 1-2)

The Ancient Silk Road is renowned as a trade route and bridge of cultural exchange and scientific and technological innovation.With the increasing international exchanges of culture,art,science and technology,the translation work about the Ancient Silk Road is springing up like mushrooms.To expand knowledge,gain practical experience,improve translation proficiency,and support the Belt and Road Initiative,the translator has translated the first and second chapter of Byzantine Silk on the Silk Roads.The selected materials of this translation practice belong to popular science,which is scientific,accessible,interesting,and literary.Based on the CEA(Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation)framework and the linguistic features of popular science,through case analysis,this report summarizes the problems and solutions in the process of translation.Comprehension problems mainly include insufficient expertise and misunderstanding of language details,so the translator utilizes the help of context and information retrieval to ensure terminology accuracy.Expression problems mainly involve Europeanized Chinese and semantic incoherence.To reproduce the original cultural connotations,the translator,therefore,deals with those problems by breaking down complex sentences,converting expressions,and utilizing four-character idioms,to make the language smooth and concise.As for the adaptation,the translator,by means of adding and deleting information,and adjustment of sentence structures,creates a natural translation that adheres to the conventions of the Chinese language and fosters greater reading enjoyment.This report can be divided into six parts: introduction,task description,the translation process,analysis framework,case analysis and the conclusion.The introduction introduces the general situation of translation practice.The task description describes the background and significance of translation.The translation process covers the pre-translation,in-translation,and post-translation.The analysis framework delves into the “Comprehension,Expression,Adaption” framework.The case analysis details the encountered problems and solutions,and finally,the conclusion reviews and summarizes the entire translation practice.
