| Stories of Poverty Alleviation in Houlong Village is a non-fiction essay that focuses on the entire process of poverty alleviation in Houlong Village,thus expressing strong characteristics of Beilong Yao culture in the narrative process.The source text of this translation report is selected from chapter 5 of Stories of Poverty Alleviation in Houlong Village,which mainly reflects the whole process of poverty alleviation and the distinctive ethnic culture of the Beilong Yao people from the perspective of the eldest person in the village,Majin.Through this translation task,the advantages of socialism with Chinese characteristics could be publicized and the good communication brought by the Belt and Road economy to the national cultures of various countries could be further consolidated.At the same time,this translation task could help create the image of Chinese narrative and Chinese discourse system to show the culture of Chinese ethnic minorities’ characteristics to foreign countries and promote intercultural communication.This translation report mainly analyzed and summarized the translation practice of this task.The source text is an informative text.Taking Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory as the guiding theory,the translator adopted different translation strategies and translation techniques to solve the translation difficulties under the interaction of the communicative context and the linguistic context,so as to achieve the purpose of conforming to the information of the source text and the context of the target readers.Based on the understanding of the culture of the target language and the local culture,the features of the source text and the connotation of the text through different choices were retained in the translation process,thus enhancing the accuracy and readability of the translation.At the lexical level,for the translation of proper nouns,the translator adopted transliteration with notes;for the translation of culture-loaded words,transliteration,transliteration with notes and free translation were used to make appropriate translation choices,thus highlighting the national cultural characteristics;for the translation of specific verbs,free translation and omission were chosen to spread Chinese literature and culture while reducing the misunderstandings of the target readers at the same time.At the syntactic level,the strategy of free translation for the sentences with simile was mainly adopted after considering the acceptability of the target readers;for the translation of long and difficult sentences,division and reorganization were used in order to make the structure clearer.At the discourse level,the translator handled the logic of the text by means of annotations,addition,and omission,so as to conform to the reading habits of the target readers.By presenting the difficulties and problems of the source text and analyzing how the translator handled them with cases by adopting different methods according to different contexts,the translator hopes her findings could shed some lights on future translation of similar source texts.Based on the translation practice and case study,the author believes that while translating ethnic minority publicity materials,translators should choose corresponding translation strategies based on different contexts to preserve the cultural connotation of the source language to the greatest extent and improve the universality of the translated text in the process of cultural transmission. |
