Can Xue,one of the representatives of avant-garde literature,is renowned for her experimental and surrealist writing style. Her novel Xin Shiji Aiqing Gushi is characterized by its language artistry, narrative style, character portrayal, and scene depiction.Translated by American translator Annelise Finegan Wasmoen, the English version of this novel was published in the United States in 2018 and was longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize and nominated for the Best Translated Book Award in the following year.On the contrary, many Chinese literary works do not fare well in terms of translation and reception overseas.Chinese culture faces difficulties in going global. Therefore, exploring the translation of Xin Shiji Aiqing Gushi in America and analyzing the reasons why it is accepted and recognized in the American literary field will have enlightening significance for Chinese literature to go out. This paper, guided by Bourdieusian Sociology, analyzes the reception of the English translation of Xin Shiji Aiqing Gushi in America from four perspectives: field, capital, habitus, and illusio, aiming to explore the main factors that contribute to the attention and recognition received by this translated work in America.Through careful analysis and argumentation, this paper arrives at the following conclusions: Xin Shiji Aiqing Gushi meets the inherent requirements of the contemporary literary field in America, receives support from the authoritative publisher in this field, and garners positive reviews from literary critics and scholars;both the original author and translator possess a relatively high degree of cultural capital, social capital, and symbolic capital;the translator selects translation materials based on her own interests, the symbolic capital possessed by the original text or author, and the taste of the target readership. In specific translation practice, she balances the readability of the translation with the characteristics of the original text, using a primarily literal translation method supplemented with liberal translation,to ensure the accuracy, adequacy, readability, and creativity of the translation;furthermore, the original author, translator, publisher, and readers influenced by illusio participate in the operation of the field to acquire more symbolic capital, economic capital, and cultural capital. All these factors have a considerable impact on the translation and reception of Love in the New Millennium in the United States. The findings of this study serve to further clarify the underlying reasons for the dissemination and recognition of Can Xue’s novels overseas, with implications for Chinese literature to participate more actively in the international literary field, enhance its global reputation, and shape China’s image.
