As an important figure of the Tongcheng School in the late Qing Dynasty,Wu Rulun not only promoted the modernization transformation of ancient literature,but his important achievements in the field of poetry were also very great.Therefore,this paper takes Wu Rulun’s poetry and poetic thought as the main object of study,combines the background of Wu Rulun’s poetic creation,on the basis of systematic analysis of the subject matter of Wu Rulun’s poetry,makes a specific and detailed discussion of the artistic characteristics of his poetry,and at the same time explores Wu Rulun’s poetic thought system,thus showing his influence on the poetry of later generations.Although Wu Rulun’s poetry is not comparable in quantity to that of the great poets of his generation,his poems are rich in subject matter,and most of them are sincere and distinctive.If we take time as the lineage,Wu Rulun’s poetry can be divided into two periods,one before and one after,with his departure from Jizhou and his lecturing at Lianchi Academy.In the first period,starting from the time he entered Zeng Guofan’s staff to the end of his departure from Jizhou,his poems are mostly poems of friendship and repartee,as well as poems with paintings.Most of the poems were magnificent and masculine,expressing the true feelings of the heart and reflecting the current situation of the society.In the later period,from the time he began to lecture at the Lianchi Academy to the time he visited Japan,his poems were richer in subject matter than those of the earlier period,and in addition to poems of gift and reply and poems of inscription and painting,there were also poems of aria,poems of chronicle,and poems of lamentation on current events and expressions of nostalgia.Among them,the majority of poems of singing and replies,only to Japan during the visit will make a hundred poems,some poems are rushed to respond,but there are also considerable.In terms of artistic characteristics,Wu Rulun’s poetry was mainly influenced by Tang poetry in terms of lyricism,and he was able to use a variety of lyrical styles to express his sincere emotions.In terms of compositional techniques,Wu’s poetry is distinctly Song poetic,using literature as poetry,scholarship as poetry,and discussion as poetry.In terms of artistic style,he combines Tang poetry and Song poetry to form his own family,presenting a variety of stylistic features such as Lian and unrestrained,pale and strong,ancient and strange,fresh and natural,reflecting a high level.In addition,Wu Rulun’s poetic thought and poetry creation complemented each other,"poetry expresses emotions","poetry learns from everyone","poetry has rules","poem stands out with its Qi " and "poem avoids light vulgarity and exalts majesty and strangeness" and other ideas,not only set the Tongcheng school of poetry,and the Chinese poetic tradition and the poetic debate in the Qing Dynasty to summarize and respond,and actively explore the modernization of the poetic context of the old and breakthrough,to Tongcheng after the strength and even the future generation of poetry students to provide an easy to follow poetic path.Wu Rulun’s achievements in the above aspects made his poetry influential,including but not limited to the Tongcheng school of poetry,i.e.,it had a certain degree of influence on the poetry scene at that time and later.In conclusion,this paper is based on Wu Rulun’s poetic works,examines the background of his poetic creation,explores the subject matter,artistic characteristics,and poetic thought of his poetry,and seeks to comprehensively grasp Wu Rulun’s poetic works and poetic thought,and reasonably define his position in the poetic world of the Qing Dynasty.
