This essay is a study on the poems of Qian Chengzhi. The poet experienced the change of dynasties. He lived like a hermit, a life with poor material but great ambition, which was typical of scholars in that period. Based on the research of others, this essay analyses the poet's life experience, change of thought and poem writing. It is meant to have a comparatively subjective and systematic account of his literary achievements. It is also hoped that this essay would help to re-evaluate Qian Chengzhi's role and influence on the literary history at the beginning of the Qing dynasty. This essay consists of five parts. The first part is a detailed description of Qian's lifetime. Meanwhile, this part also reflects the life experience and psychological change of scholars at that time. This part paves the way for further research. The second part is on Qian's thought. His point of view also has three parts which is the same as his life experience. It changes from Confucianism to Confucianism and Buddhism to a combination of Confucianism and Buddhism and Taoism, which is also typical to that of other scholars in that period. The third part begins with an analysis of Qian's poems. With the analysis, it reflects Qian's view on poetry. Some of his poems express his longing for the replaced Ming dynasty. What's more, the author sums up the artistic features of Qian's works and the changing process of poetic features. The fourth part is a research on Qian's poetic theory. This theory is made up of three parts: first, the poem should reflect the poet's real feelings and be positive and active; second, the poet should be learned and take poem writing seriously; third, the poem should be encouraging and have its unique characteristics. After summarizing the poetic theory, this article analyses the poet's view on poetry. The fifth and last part is a research on Qian's influence on the Tongcheng School of poetry. It also reevaluates Qian's historic role.
