With the social and cultural upheaval in the late Qing Dynasty,Wu Rulun,as a literati with a historical sense,sought countermeasures to the article under the dual requirements of saving the social crisis and preserving Chinese culture.He explored the deep mechanism of the article,and formed a literary theory with cai,qi and xue as the core.This paper focuses on Wu Rulun’s three categories of cai,qi and xue,and divides into four chapters to discuss his unique article theory.The first chapter discusses the connotation of the categories of cai,qi and xue.Cai refers to the author’s ability to present the aesthetic experience as an article.Qi is divided into qi gu,qi mai,qi yun and the author’s mental image.The first three refer to the language expression,structure arrangement and overall rhythm of the article,while the author’s mental image refers to the author’s perfect life image that presented in the article.Xue can be summarized as learning ethics,learning useful knowledge and learning to write articles.The second chapter explores the relationship between cai,qi and xue.There are mainly two parts.The first part is the relationship between cai and xue.Cai enables xue to be used better and xue can better cultivate cai.The second part is the relationship between cai,xue and qi.Cai can make qi have the characteristic of energy,and xue can make qi have the characteristic of mellow.Under the joint action of both,qi has the characteristic of mellow and energy,and the article has the style of mellow and energy.The third chapter discusses Wu Rulun’s new understanding of article from the perspective of cai,qi and xue.Wu had a new view on the relationship between literature and tao,put forward the view that tao is long by literature.And he summed up the essence of the article in qi,and emphasized the aesthetic and openness of the article.At the same time,based on his emphasis on articles and his understanding of western culture,he also put forward the proposition of spreading western culture by Chinese articles.He required the dissemination of western culture by Chinese articles in translation and school education,so as to reconcile the contradiction between Chinese culture and western culture at that time.In the fourth chapter,Wu Rulun’s cai,qi and xue literary theory is put into the evolution of the literary theory of Tongcheng School.In this way,we can find its contribution to the development of Tongcheng school literary theory.In essence,Wu Rulun’s literary theory turns the li that Tongcheng School pays attention to into qi,and reconcilesthe contradiction between li and qi.On the basis of Yao Nai’s theory,Wu Rulun proposed to divide the style of the article with mellow and energy.He also puts forward the ideal style of article is mellow and energy,so as to transfer the formation mechanism of the style of the article from li to person himself,which breaks through the traditional style of Tongcheng School.Wu Rulun’s literary theory is actually the result of his balance between traditional literary theory and western culture.With his open-minded and tolerant attitude,he not only carried forward the articles of Tongcheng School,maintained the traditional literature and literary theory,but also advocated western learning,which laid a foreshada for the development of new literature.His literary theory is of time value. |
