Egypt has the largest population of 22 Arab countries. With the implementation of the "the belt and road initiative" policy, the number of students studying Chinese is increasing day by day.In the upsurge of Chinese learning in Egypt, various problems in the process of Chinese teaching have gradually emerged,of which initial consonant teaching is the most prominent one. Therefore, the research on the students’ initial consonant listening and distinguishing ability will better promote the Chinese teaching in Egypt as a whole, improve the Chinese teaching level in Egypt, and better train high-level Chinese talents to promote the communication between China and Egypt.Voice is vividly called the "shell" of language. For teachers, phonetic teaching is the basis of overall Chinese teaching. For students, pronunciation learning is the beginning of the whole Chinese learning. The accuracy of initial consonant pronunciation will directly affect the pronunciation of the whole syllable, and also affect their later learning in vocabulary, grammar, etc.Cognitive psychology thinks that the process of listening and distinguishing is a process of decoding or processing information, which mainly includes five steps:distinguishing sound, sensing information, auditory memory, decoding information and storing information. The abilities that need to be applied in the process of listening and distinguishing mainly include the abilities of receiving voice information, distinguishing and analyzing, memory and storage, and language output.Based on the analysis of the initial consonant discrimination test data, this paper analyzes and studies the initial consonant discrimination ability of the primary level Chinese students in Confucius Institute of Cairo University,Egypt. The author took 100 students in Level 1,the primary level of Chinese in Confucius Institute of Cairo University in Egypt,as the research object to carry out listening tests to check their initial consonants. The 100 subjects have been learning Chinese for 12 weeks, and have mastered 21 initial consonants(excluding zero initial consonants),39 final consonants, tones and other related phonetic knowledge,as well as about 150 commonly used words and some grammatical points. The author designs an initial consonant listening and distinguishing ability test paper based on the difficulties in pronunciation teaching. In this test,100 test papers were issued and 100 valid test papers were retrieved. The valid data were counted and presented in tabular form to visually show the initial consonant recognition of Chinese beginners in Confucius Institute of Cairo University,Egypt. This paper consists of four parts,of which the introduction briefly describes the research reason and research value of this paper, summarizes the research results on Egyptian Chinese teaching, initial consonant teaching and listening and distinguishing ability both at home and abroad, and introduces the theoretical basis, research methods, innovation and deficiency of this paper. The first chapter introduces the overall teaching situation of the initial consonant teaching in Level 1 of Confucius Institute of Cairo University in Egypt from the following three aspects:curriculum arrangement, teaching content and teaching skills. It also analyzes the present situation and existing problems in the overall teaching arrangement, teaching materials, teachers and students of the initial consonant teaching in Level1 of the Institute. The second chapter focuses on introducing and analyzing the test objects, test methods and test contents of the listening test paper. In this chapter, the listening test data of 100 test objects are collated and drawn into statistical charts. After the general introduction, the 21 initials of Putonghua are classified according to the pronunciation positions of the initials and the listening and distinguishing situations of students are specifically analyzed. The third chapter analyzes the problems existing in the process of initial consonant recognition of Chinese beginners in Confucius Institute of Cairo University in Egypt from the perspectives of negative transfer of mother tongue, characteristics of target language and other reasons in combination with the situation reflected by statistical data. The fourth chapter combines the initial consonant teaching situation of the primary level Chinese students in the Confucius Institute of Cairo University in Egypt with the problems reflected in the actual listening process, and puts forward targeted teaching suggestions for the initial consonant teaching in the Confucius Institute of Cairo University. This paper holds that teachers can carry out targeted teaching of initials with many problems in students’ listening and distinguishing through intensive speaking and more practice, highlighting key points, increasing classroom interest, combining phonemes with syllables, and using listening micro-skill teaching method.
