With the development of China’s overall national power,local governments have invested in building English websites with Chinese characteristics to promote local features and advantages in English,with the aim of attracting investment,attracting tourists and enhancing the charm of the local image.This report is based on the Chinese-English translation of tourism and cultural articles of Fujian Province.The source text is composed of 32 website news articles from online translation company.In order to make the translated texts achieve the best effect of external publicity,the author analyzes and summarizes relevant experience in the translation process under the guidance of translation shifts,hoping to provide suggestions for future translation of the same genre.According to Catford(1965),the translation process is the process of equivalence conversion between a target language and a source language from a modern linguistic perspective.In the process of this translation,the author chose to use John Catford’s translation shifts as the theoretical guidance for this text translation.Translation shifts can be divided into level shifts and category shifts,where category shifts can be subdivided into structure shifts,class shifts,unit shifts and intra-system shifts.Since the difficulties of this translation task are mainly concerned with sentence structure and logic,the author chose to use the category shifts to subdivide the translation difficulties into the level of structural shifts,the class shifts and the unit shifts.From these three aspects,the author translated texts with local characteristics from Chinese to English,such as words,sentences and rhetorical devices,which are difficult to translate in the source texts.Under the guidance of the theory of structure shifts,the author solved the problems concerning changing the active voice into the passive voice,changing the object into the adverbial modifier,and changing the pre-positive attributives into the post-positive attributives.Guided by class shifts,the author focused on the shifts of nouns,adjectives and verbs between Chinese and English.In the aspect of unit shifts,the author analyzed from the aspects of words,phrases,clauses,and sentences.This report introduces the translation strategies and methods involved in translation shifts,and makes an analysis of specific cases in Chinese to English translation.The author has gained a deeper understanding of Catford’s translation shifts in the course of this translation practice.Under the guidance of translation shifts,the author realizes that in the translation process of external publicity texts,it is not only necessary to pay attention to the accuracy and rationality of the target language,but also to the appropriateness and communication of the translated texts,so as to help promote external publicity.It is hoped that this report can provide some relevant suggestions for future external publicity translation.
