In 1807,British missionary John Morrison came to China as a missionary. From then on,a large number of Western missionaries, businessmen, diplomats came to China, they tried to learn Chinese to adapt to the life and work in China.Westerners in China have deepened their understanding of Chinese language teaching in the process of Chinese language learning, and their research on Chinese language teaching methods has gradually matured with a distinct color of The Times. The Chinese Repository(1832--1851)and The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal(1868--1941)were two important English periodicals founded by westerners. As an important platform for Chinese learning and communication, the two English periodicals published many articles on Chinese teaching for westerners. These articles are the summary of the Chinese teaching experience of westerners at that time, reflecting their high Chinese level and positive learning attitude, and are important historical materials for the study of Chinese teaching in westerners. At present, the academic research on this kind of literature needs to be strengthened.Taking the information recorded in these two English journals as an example, this thesis summarizes the research on Western Chinese teaching in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,in order to explore the important characteristics of their Chinese "teaching" and "learning",and provide some reference for today’s teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. This thesis is divided into five parts: The first part is the introduction, which introduces the reason, significance, research object and research method of this thesis. The first chapter, based on the discussion from the perspective of professors in "The Chinese Repository" and "The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal",analyzes and summarizes the three aspects of establishing schools, compiling Chinese textbooks and summarizing teaching methods. The second chapter summarizes the occupation, learning motivation and other factors of Chinese learners based on the thinking of Western learners in "The Chinese Repository" and "The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal",thus showing the basic features of Western learners at that time.Chapter three summarizes the teaching experience and methods of western learners in oral, written and special styles of Chinese from the perspective of stylistic teaching in "The Chinese Repository" and "The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal".The fourth chapter, from the perspective of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, combines the analysis and research of "The Chinese Repository" and "The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal",sums up the enlightenment for today’s Chinese as a foreign language educators, learners and textbook compilation.
