| Taking the speech of Christopher Voss in the JMP interview as the subject of simulated simultaneous interpreting, this paper aims to test the interpreter’s interpreting ability during the graduate study and to maximize the overall interpreting effect by combining authoritative interpreting theory and personal learning in the interpreting process. In addition, the topic selected by the interpreter is typical. It has prominent characteristics of interpreting materials, which is of high interpreting value, making this practice have particular practical significance and research value. Before the practice, the interpreter analyzed the parallel corpus of the two speakers, compiled and wrote a glossary of terms, and made sufficient pre-interpreting preparation for the interview. The interpreter adopted Gill’s effort models and Chernov’s compression theory as the guiding theories for the whole interpreting process. The interpreter found some typical characteristics of the interpreting subjects, such as the whole interview was too colloquial with many repetitions, and there were many redundant contents.Based on this, the interpreter describes in detail in this report the techniques and strategies to cope with these difficulties, such as the compression theory can be used to optimize the interpreting, and the methods of waiting, omission and word addition can be used to deal with the original sentence expressions. Also, the interpreter has some for improvement, such as missing information in the mock interpreting, about which the interpreter also proposed target improvement measures in the post-interpreting reflection.Through this practice, the interpreter has proposed targeted measures to deal with such phenomena as repetitive expressions, redundant information, meaningless filler words, humorous expressions and speech skills, which have certain research significance and application value. In addition, the interpreter’s choice of this interview is also helpful in deepening the audience’s understanding of the FBI hostage negotiation. To a certain extent,it can inspire the relevant negotiation experts in China or the audience interested in negotiation. At the same time,it can also deepen the mutual understanding between China and the United States and promote friendly communication between the two cultures. |
