This practice report is based on an English—Chinese consecutive interpreting. The author served as a consecutive interpreter for a simulated interview entitled “The Development of World-Class Universities in China and America”,a task of the Interpreting Training Camp conducted by School of Foreign Languages of Northeast Normal University in May,2018.By referring to the on-site interpreting quality feedbacks, and analyzing from the perspectives of pre-interpreting preparation, interpreting performance and post-interpreting evaluation, interpreting problems such as improper loss of information, failure of coordinating listening, memory and notetaking, and over-literal interpretation were summarized so as to probe into corresponding coping strategies in this report. With the guidance of Daniel Gile's Effort Model, where Listening and Analysis Effort,Short-term Memory Effort and Production Effort should well coordinate, the author analyzed her interpreting deficiencies from the perspectives of listening comprehension,note-taking and reproduction, and concluded the reasons as followed: viewing too narrowly to well prepare for the interpreting task led to loss of information since some topics imposed challenges onto the author, causing her memory burden, especially in the listening comprehension of complex sentences.Failing to properly spend efforts on short-term memory and note-taking interfered the author in doing both of them, and an absence of contextual link in the notes caused her logical disorder. In the phase of reproduction, the author sometimes interpreted word for word and sentence for sentence, thus the original was expressed unclearly.Faced with the problems in the interpreting practice, the author proposed the following coping strategies.First, extracting key words and splitting ideas in listening phase is helpful for reducing memory burden, and collecting information covering as wide as possible could avoid loss of information that is caused by subject unfamiliarity.Second,to coordinate memory and note-taking could reduce memory burden, and increase note-taking efficiency.Additionally, marking contextual link in notes could reduce logical disorder.Third,to interpret on the basis of real understanding of the original is vital for fully conveying the original idea.
