| The investigation and study of Maijishan Grottoes in modern times began with Feng Guorui’s investigation in 1941.In 1946 Li Yu inspected Maijishan Grottoes and completed The Investigation Report of Maijishan Grottoes in the following year, which has not been published. The full contents of the report have not been available to the public until 2017,when the photocopied photos of the report were included in the Longyou Manuscripts Literature Series(The first volume). The Investigation Report of Maijishan Grottoes contains more than 10,000 characters, including 169 caves, stone inscriptions and cliffs.Through the collation of this manuscript and field investigation, the following conclusions can be drawn.Firstly,Li Yu inspected Maijishan Grottoes in 1946 and completed the report in 1947.Secondly,Li Yu’s sequence of cave numbers was consistent with the walking route, that is,from east to west and from top to bottom, which also provided a new walking path for the early investigation of Maijishan Grottoes.Thirdly,in the report,Li Yu recorded in detail the inscriptions and murals in the fourth cave, which can fill in the absence of original materials caused by age and natural shedding. Finally, based on his work experience,Li Yu measured the cave sizes of Cave 1,Cave 4,Cave 9 and Cave 28-30,and the data were authentic and reliable. It was the first time for domestic scholars to measure some caves of Maijishan Grottoes, providing important data support for supplementing the original data of caves. The Investigation Report of Maijishan Grottoes by Li Yu restored part of the contents of the grottoes and supplemented the numbering process of the grottoes.Focusing on the investigation activities of Maijishan Grottoes in the 1940 s and 1950 s,the study of this investigation report can trigger a new round of academic discussion, and provide a research material of academic value for strengthening the protection and utilization of Maijishan Grottoes resources and promoting the construction of Maijishan cultural relics protection database. |
