Sergei Vassilievitch Rachmaninoff, born in Russia in 1873,was an important classical composer, pianist and conductor of the 20 th century, who contributed greatly to the development of Russian music. In his life,Rachmaninoff not only experienced the Holodomor but also suffered from depression.Due to these tragic life experiences, many of Rachmaninoff’s piano works have strong tragic overtones, and the set of Fantasy Sketches Op.3 has strong tragic overtones, but few literature sources are used to study the tragic overtones of this set,so the author hopes that through the op.3,I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the tragic overtones in it.The Fantasy Sketches op.3contains five separate piano sketches-Lament,Prelude in ascending c minor,Melody,Clown and Serenade. These five miniatures have independent titles, different styles and different musical images. In this paper,we analyse the background and the emotional connotations of Rachmaninov’s Fantasy Op.3,and explore the work in the light of the author’s own performance experience and perceptions. The paper uses documentary analysis, comparative research, practical research and analytical induction to investigate Rachmaninov’s Fantasy Miniatures op.3.The introductory section covers the significance of the chosen topic, the current state of research, and summarises the relevant information. The first chapter explores Rachmaninov’s life and the background of the composition of Fantasy Sketches Op.3,analysing Rachmaninov’s life experiences and the reasons for the tragic overtones of this work. The third chapter analyses the technical difficulties and the emotional expression in the performance of the Fantasy Piece Op.3.The technical difficulties are analysed in terms of flexible leaning and short arpeggios, the use of pedals, speed and intensity, major chords and long jumps, while the emotional expression is studied in terms of the mood required to play the tragic colours.
