| Since the “Belt and Road Initiative” was proposed in 2013,the position of Pacific Island countries in China’s diplomatic strategy has once again been put on the agenda. As the economic and political center of the Pacific Island region,Fiji is one of the most important countries on the southern route of the 21 st Century Maritime Silk Road and has friendly relations with China. This report selects 5-Year & 20-Year National Development Plan of Republic of Fiji issued by Fiji government in 2017 as the translation practice material. The translation purpose of this translation practice material is to convey Fiji’s national policy and give Chinese readers a better understanding of the country through a translation version consistent with the Chinese expression.Skopos theory emphasizes that translation is a discourse produced for a certain purpose and target audience in the context of the target language. Therefore, this theory is chosen as the theoretical perspective of this translation practice.Because long sentences account for a high proportion of the selected text, this report focuses on the translation of long sentences of 5-Year & 20-Year National Development Plan of Republic of Fiji. The most important principle of skopos theory is “skopos rule”,so the author focuses on the expression habits of Chinese readers in translation. In the process of sentence translation, the author first analyzes the source sentence, and then analyzes the expression habits of Chinese. Finally, from the perspective of the three rules of skopos theory, translation methods, such as “embedding” “cutting” “linear translation”“reversing” “splitting-off” and “recasting”,are adopted to translate long sentences into a complete and fluent translation that conforms to the Chinese expression. At the end, this report finds that it is feasible and applicable to conduct translation practice from the perspective of skopos theory. This translation practice can give readers a further understanding of skopos theory, provide a reference for the translation work of similar themes, and strengthen China’s understanding of Fiji,a country on the Maritime Silk Road, further deepening the communication between these two countries. |
