A Report On The C-E Translation Of SX5K Maintenance Manual (Excerpt) Under The Functional Equivalence Theory

The maintenance manual mainly introduces the maintenance methods and common troubles of the vehicle,aiming to help users master the maintenance method of the vehicle.This report is based on the Chinese-English translation practice of vehicle body structure in SX5 K Maintenance Manual,combined with Nida’s functional equivalence theory,to discuss and summarize the relevant English translation methods in the entire translation process.The report pointed out the keys and difficulties of this translation practice activity,and proposed corresponding solutions.This report will be a useful reference for the translators and related practitioners.As a kind of scientific text,auto maintenance manual presents the following text characteristics: there are many specialized vocabulary and long phrases with multiple nouns juxtaposed;in terms of sentences,there are many simple sentences and active sentences,and some sentences with passive meaning are also showed in the form of active form;in addition,there are many diagrams.Based on Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory,this translation practice report analyzes the differences in grammatical structure,word collocation and expression form between English and Chinese in scientific and technological texts.The translation methods such as free translation,combination and conversion,as well as the processing skills of adjusting the word order and phrase order,and conversing sentence pattern to convert the deep structure of the source language into the surface structure of the target language,so as to maximize the realization of the communication between the source language text and the target language text.Linguistic stylistic equivalence to ensure that the target text is close to the discourse norms of the audience.This report consists of five parts: firstly,the translator introduces the background,significance and structure of this task in detail.Secondly,a brief exposition of the pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation work in the translation process is introduced.The third part briefly introduces the definition and principle of the functional equivalence theory,and analyzes the theoretical guidance to the SX5 K Maintenance Manual.The fourth part is the specific case study in this translation practice activity mainly from the lexical,syntactic and diagrammatic levels.The translation methods such as free translation,combination and conversion,as well as the processing skills of adjusting the word order and phrase order,and conversing sentence pattern in the process of English translation of this maintenance manual from the perspective of the functional equivalence theory are summarized.The fifth part is the conclusion,which mainly summarizes the limitations of this practice and corresponding suggestions,in order to provide the references for other translation practice.
