The source text of this translation practice report is Understanding Global Cultures(Chapter12 and Chapter 13).This book constructs the concept of “cultural metaphor”.It is of certain translation value to help people understand and compare cultures around the world and the cultural values hidden behind them.Chapter 12 mainly introduces the cultural metaphor of the Canadian flag, and Chapter 13 analyzes its social values by taking outdoor leisure activities as the cultural metaphor of Australia.By applying the Relevance Theory of pragmatics to the study of translation,Gutt interpreted the act of translation as a dual ostensive-inferential communication. Therefore,Relevance Translation Theory proposes that to achieve optimal relevance of the target text, the translator should accurately convey the communicative intention of the original author,so that the target reader can obtain the appropriate contextual effect with the least effort.Under the guidance of Relevance Translation Theory proposed, this paper attempts to analyze the translation cases in Chapters 12 and 13 of Understanding Global Cultures. In order to explore the translation methods and techniques to achieve the optimal relevance of the target text from three aspects: lexical cultural connotation, logic in sentence and text style.First, according to the specific context, corresponding translation, addition, and annotation are used to transfer the cultural connotation of words in the source text.Second, the cohesion of logical relation in translation is supposed to promote by sentence reconstruction, explicit relation words, conversion in the voices and so on.Third, translation methods such as free translation and omission should be used to reproduce the text style of the original text according to the context and promote cohesion and coherence of the text.It is hoped that this translation practice report can provide some references for the future translation of this type of text, and at the same time, can further promote people to understand the cultural differences between different countries, and promote people’s cross-cultural communication.
