A Report On The C-E Translation Of Installation,Commissioning,Operation And Maintenance Of Electric Vehicle Charging Piles (Excerpts)

The translation report is a summary of the Chinese-English translation on sections from six to nine in Chapter One of Installation,Commissioning,Operation and Maintenance of Electric Vehicle Charging Piles.Based on John Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory,this report applies appropriate translation techniques and methods to address difficulties and problems in the translation process for an accurate and readable translation text.The source text belongs to sci-tech texts,of which typical features are plenty of terminologies,complicated sentence structures and rigorous stylistic style.These features cause difficulties in translation.Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory classifies translation shifts into two types: level shifts and category shifts.The former focuses on shifts between grammar and lexis,while the latter gives explanations on translation strategies in terms of part of speech,rank and grammatical structure.According to the features of the source text and the difficulties encountered,the translator has applied Translation Shifts Theory as the project’s theoretical guidance to solve the problems caused by discrepancies between English and Chinese in sci-tech texts,thus effectively improving the readability and practicability of the translation.By analyzing typical cases,it can be concluded that the difficulties caused by differences between Chinese and English in sci-tech texts could be effectively handled within Catford’s framework.Level shifts are applied to address grammatical difficulties with numbers and tenses in the C-E translation process.English inflectional affixes representing noun plurals are used to correspond to plural expressions in Chinese.English tenses can express the concept of time in Chinese.Structure shifts and unit shifts under the category shifts are frequently applied in translating long and complicated sentences in Chinese.Class shifts effectively solve the problem in the translation process that Chinese does not completely correspond to English as for part of speech.
