Herbert Marcuse(1898-1979),is the main representative of the left wing of Frankfurt School and a philosopher of the new left. His theory of Eros liberation is the product that combines Marxism’thought and Freud’thought and is an important theory of "Freudian Marxism".Based on Marcuse’s classic works, this paper deeply and carefully combs and interprets the theory of Eros liberation, and tries to outline the overall outline of Marcuse’s theory of Eros liberation from five aspects:the ideological context, connotation, the expression of repressed Eros, the realization and theoretical value and limits of the theory of Eros liberation, and it is believed that Marcuse’s theory of Eros liberation has great enlightenment for us to analyze the living conditions of people in the developed industrial society and today’s society. This paper is mainly divided into six parts:The introduction section. This part mainly expounds the background of this paper, the research status at home and abroad of Marcuse’s thought and research significance of this paper, the paper’s research ideas and methods.Chapter One discusses the ideological context of Marcuse’s theory of Eros liberation.Firstly,it discusses the era background of Marcuse’s theory of Eros liberation, and then explains the theoretical origin of the theory of Eros liberation: Marx’s theory of alienated labor, human essence and human liberation,as well as Freud’s psychoanalysis.Chapter Two discusses the connotation of the theory of Eros liberation from the root of the repression of Eros. The first section examines in detail the four sources of repression of Eros:the repression of the sexual instincts by civilization, the basic repression caused by lack and the struggle for existence, the control of libido by the performance principle and surplus-repression imposed by social privileged classes; The second section explains the two objects of the liberation of Eros, that is,the liberation of labor and the liberation of nature; The third section focuses on the key dimension of Eros liberation.Because art itself is the storeroom of Eros and can provide languages and images for the new needs and target system dominated by Eros energy, the aesthetic-artistic dimension is the key dimension of Eros liberation.Chapter Three expounds the specific manifestation of the repression of Eros through the disclosure of one-dimentional political, economic and cultural phenomena in the developed industrial society. The first section discusses the one-dimentional economy, that is,people’s true needs are replaced by false needs, and technology has become the current form of controlling people; The second section discusses the one-dimentioal politics, that is,the working class is assimilated and the welfare state is under deceptive rule; The second section discusses the one-dimentional politics, that is,the working class is assimilated and the welfare state is under deceptive rule; The third section discusses the one-dimentional culture, that is,the higher culture of the bourgeoisie has been eliminated and the artistic alienation has lost its function.Chapter Four expounds how the liberation of Eros is realized. The first section proposes that the goal of Eros liberation is to establish a non-repressive civilization that eliminates surplus-repression;The second section points out that the subject of Eros liberation is the new left that has not been assimilated, and the form of Eros liberation is the overall revolution including politics, economy, instinctive structure and value revolution; The third section puts forward the specific ways to liberate Eros, including transforming sexual desire into Eros and using the function of artistic resistance and transformation of reality to liberate Eros.Chapter Five examines the value and limitation of Marcuse’s theory of Eros liberation.Firstly, talking about the value of the theory of Eros liberation.Marcuse identified human essence as Eros from the instinctive and psychological levels, and took the liberation of human’s Eros as an important content of human liberation, thus safeguarding human’s subject status;Marcuse’s overall revolutionary theory is a new liberation theory put forward in combination with the new era background, which enriches the form of liberation;Marcuse explores and emphasizes the value of aesthetic-artistic dimension, and believes that art has the characteristics of transcendence and idealism,as well as political potential;Marcuse’s theory of Eros liberation provides a new perspective to criticize mass culture from the perspective of Eros and the performance principle.Secondly, discussing the limits of the theory of Eros liberation.Because the theory of Eros essence ignores people’s social and historical attributes,it has closeness and limitations;Marcuse’s assumption of the revolutionary subject is unrealistic,so it has the characteristics of utopian.
