| At present, researches on nominalization structure,in particular,"N of NP" structure, have been mainly focused on Sci-Tech and business English including law, energy and public opinion, with little research in specialized English for military science. Moreover, studies have proved that it is difficult to translate when "N of NP" structure contains general words with specialized military meaning. Therefore,on the basis of the translation of chapters 6,7 and 8(part)of the U.S.Marine Corps Offensive and Defensive Tactics, which mainly introduces the tactical skills used by troops in military operations, the report is aimed to study the translation methods of "N of NP" structure in military English. In this report, the definition of "N of NP" structure is put forward firstly, following which its characteristics in military texts are discussed. The relationship between nouns before and after "of" is classified into five categories:subject-predicate relation,verb-object relation,subject-be-predicative relation, belonging relation and appositive relation. On that basis, translation methods upon five categories of "N of NP" structure are figured out.Instead of directly translating "of" into the structure with "de" in Chinese, translators are expected to make the expression more in line with Chinese habits in word order and logic through reconstruction, and try to maintain the stylistic characteristics of the original text. |
