A Report On The E-C Translation Of RHS Propagating Plants:How To Create New Plants For Free (Excerpts)

The corpus of this translation report comes from RHS Propagating Plants:How to Create New Plants for Free(《园艺植物繁育手册》),and its author is Alan Toogood.The main content of this book is to teach gardeners how to grow new plants from existing plants.The text excerpted for this translation report is the third chapter of this book.The style of the book is expository and its language is characterized by short and concise sentences.Considering that the sentences of this text have many similar structures and a large number of terms,the author borrowed the computer-aided software Trados in the process of translation.This report takes post-translation editing as an entry point,looking for ways to make up for the shortcomings of machine translation software in translating expository texts.During the research,the author found that the software had problems in the text processing before translation,and exposed the shortcomings of inflexibility and incoherence of the translation in the face of the concise expository text of the original text.In this paper,the post-translation editing of the machine translation text is mainly carried out from three aspects,namely punctuation,lexical and syntactic levels.In terms of punctuation,the author analyzes the semicolons that are quite different between Chinese and English.By transforming semicolons and adding conjunctions,the use of punctuation in the translation is more standardized.At the level of lexical,the author mainly uses the translation methods of amplification which added verb,adjective,subject and category word and repetition to make the translation more coherent.Finally,at the syntactic level,the author adjusts the translation to make it more in line with the Chinese expression habits through the translation methods such as amplification,division,inversion,and conversion.This research has a certain reference value for helping gardening enthusiasts to master more gardening knowledge.At the same time,the author also hopes that this text can contribute to the further development of computer-aided translation software and post-translation editing.
