This thesis is a practical report on the translation of a biography,Aftershocks,Written by American writer Nadia Owusu. The book was published on January 12,2021,and no Chinese version was found. This is a poetic work of memoir. It focuses on the author’s grappling with the fault lines of identity, the meaning of home, black womanhood, and the ripple effect of the aftermath of emotional trauma. And it also depicts the author’s turbulent, painful, and somewhat warm childhood experiences. This report mainly combines the documentary and authentic characteristics of biographical works, and the translator chooses to use Newmark’s translation theory-semantic translation and communicative translation-as the theoretical basis for this practice report. In the process of translation practice, the translator discovers that this memoir has a large number of polysemous words,so the translator takes word derivation and multiple meanings as the entry point of this translation practice report.Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative theory, the translator selects the extension of words on the basis of a full understanding of the context,so as to make the translation accurate and fluent.Through this translation practice, the translator discovers the characteristics and difficulties of the memoir text. The translator chooses the appropriate meaning of the words according to their lexical categories in the sentences and combines semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory. In addition, the translator also uses appropriate translation methods to truly convey the information of the original text and make the translation smooth and fluent. It is expected that this practice report can provide some inspiration and reference for the translation of memoir texts in the future.
