On The C-E Translation Of Abstracts On Social Sciences Journal Papers From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

This thesis is based on the C-E abstract translation of social sciences journal papers which are selected from the Journal of Changsha University of Science and Technology(Social Sciences Edition),whose columns includes sci-tech philosophy research,Marxism and Chinese road research,Chinese poetry research,and economy and management research.The Chinese abstracts of CSUST journal feature clear and complete structure,objective and accurate content and concise language.The high quality of English abstracts is helpful to increase the probability of paper retrieval and citation,and further plays a positive role in promoting the international influence of j ournals.In view of the characteristics of Chinese abstracts of social science journal papers,taking Verschueren’s adaptation theory as a guiding theory,this thesis makes a detailed analysis from four dimensions,namely,contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability,and salience of adaptation.At the contextual correlates of adaptability level,the translator constantly chooses language means to achieve communicative intention according to the needs of communicative context,translation skills such as shift,reversion,and literal translation are employed to adapt to the physical world,psychological world and social world.At the structural objects of adaptability level,categorical words and repetitive words are omitted for the adaptation of concise vocabularies in abstracts,the shift of non-subject sentences and the division of sentence with serial verb structure are to achieve the adaptation of short and compact sentences in abstracts,and nominal substitution and personal reference are to achieve the cohesion of discourse.At the dynamics of adaptability level,the translator makes conscious choices and use extension to logic and free translation of four-character Chinese idiom to deal with source text semantics to meet communication needs.At the salience of adaptation level,translation skills such as conversion of verb and addition of conjunction are used to adapt to the communicative purpose of the source text.The analysis of this part proves that the adaptation theory has strong explanatory power for the C-E abstract translation of social sciences journal papers,which could provide some references for the translators,and further improve the quality of translation of Chinese abstracts.
