| Energy has always been a source of economic growth and the material basis for human survival.Energy, represented by petroleum, affects not only the world’s political situation but also has a bearing on the peace and tranquility of the world. Therefore, energy is a common concern for China and the rest of the world, and the translation of such texts into Chinese is particularly vital. The first chapter of Oil 2020 Analysis and Forecast to 2025,an annual outlook on the global oil market released by the International Energy Agency(IEA),is selected as the source text in the report. As it was published in 2020,the year of the outbreak of the New Coronavirus(COVID-19),this text is of greater practical importance to scholars studying international energy developments and the current state of oil and energy. When translating petroleum science and technology texts, the translation method that conforms to the source text is always adopted to make the content objective and accurate. And the functional equivalence theory emphasizes that translation is to reproduce the information of the original text in the most appropriate and natural equivalents in the translated language,so the translator decides to choose the functional equivalence theory proposed by Nida to guide the translation of petroleum science and technology texts. It is hoped that this report will serve as a reference for translators working in related industries. In this report, the functional equivalence theory is selected as the guiding theory for the translator to analyze and discuss the problems encountered in the translation process from three aspects: lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence and textual equivalence. The literal translation is applied to the professional terms at the lexical level, and the word conversion is adopted to make the target language more fluent and native. At the syntactic level, voice conversion techniques, word order adjustment, and sentence splitting are put forward to make the content more concise and straightforward. At the textual level, the coherence and cohesion of the content are achieved by analyzing logical relations and clarifying demonstrative pronouns between sentences. |
