Art song is a kind of artistic expression of the highest civilization and wisdom of mankind. In the history of western art song creation,Franz Schubert(1797 ~ 1828)and Gustav Mahler(1860 ~ 1911)respectively as the representatives of the early and late Romanticism, their art songs in the entire history of western music occupy an important position. It can be said that the charm and emotion contained in the lyrics of his art songs are perfectly matched with the corresponding musical elements(theme melody, harmony, texture, etc.)Schubert’s art song creation highlights the early creation techniques of Romanticism, implying his understanding of life and the world.Mahler laid the foundation for the symphonic form of songs and pushed German-Austrian romantic art songs to a new peak. This paper studies Schubert’s art song "The Linden Tree"(from;Winter Journey Diverticle,1920-1925)and Mahler’s art song "Eyes Blue"(from; The Traveler’s Song. The creative thinking of melodies,1885)and the personalized artistic language used to explore how the creation of art songs in two different historical periods changed and developed,so as to achieve a more accurate artistic interpretation. This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter mainly studies the life and creation background of Schubert and Mahler, and then leads to the topic of this paper. The second chapter and the third chapter respectively study the relationship between the composition of the theme melody and the content of the lyrics of "Bodhi Tree" and "Eyes in Blue",the personalized harmonic technique, the music texture structure and the composition logic of tonality. The four chapter is a comparative study on the basis of the previous two chapters, through the comparison of the two composers’ different music language and then extend to the development and change of the whole music creation thinking and techniques in different historical periods of the two composers. The fifth chapter is based on the comparative study of the previous chapters, combined with the author as a singing major student, talk about how to better interpret the two works to explore.Although there have been a lot of achievements in the research of art songs by Schubert and Mahler, there are few literatures on the comparative research of the two composers.I hope to make my contribution to the research in this field through my research.
