A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Sudanese Economic News Based On Functionalist Skopos Theory

Economic news is a special text featuring objectivity and professionalism,with the main purpose of conveying information.It is an important way for ordinary readers to get the latest development in economic field.To do a good job in the translation of foreign countries’ economic news can serve as a bridge for economic and people-to-people exchanges between countries.Therefore,it is required that the translated news should be readable and can achieve equal effect in target audience.Under this circumstance,the reporter selects the news from the economic section on the website of Sudan as translation materials to conduct a translation project.After implementing the project,the reporter re-analyzes the translation process and results,and finds out some problems by referring to relevant studies done by previous scholars.The problems can be summarized into lexical,syntactic and textual levels:first,difficulties involved in translating compound words and economic terminologies precisely;second,problems with translating long sentences and passive sentences;third,the translation of headlines and the coherence of the text.Correspondingly,under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the reporter provides corresponding solutions:first,use literal translation with annotation and free translation;second,focus on the translation of long sentences and passive sentences by turning to sequential translation,inverse translation and split and restructuring translation methods;third,take the rhetorical devices to flexibly translate headlines and adopt cohesive devices to improve the cohesion and coherence.Through this report,the reporter found that,under the guidance of Vermeer’s Skopos Theory,the target text of Sudanese economic news is more readable and more precise.Besides,translators can also have more freedom in the choice of translation strategies and techniques,which can ensure the expression of the core meaning of the original text and achieve the same effect the original text intends.The reporter hopes to provide valuable reference for the application of Skopos Theory in translating economic news.
