Translating English IT News Into Chinese: A Project Report From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Nowadays science and technology are developing rapidly, and playing a crucial role in a country’ social, economic and cultural development. The spread of science and technology information becomes a major bridge for countries to exchange science and technology achievements with each other, and also a main way for people to learn about and work with science and technology. The translation of science and technology news (tech news in short form) from English to Chinese is the most efficient and necessary method for helping people get aware of the latest tech information across the world. As a branch of tech news, IT news (information technology news) is most closely linked with our daily life.As a very effective theory of translation, Skopos Theory has three major rules:the Skopos Rule, the Fidelity Rule and the Coherence Rule. According to this theory, the primal principle that determines the whole translation process is the Skopos (purpose) of the overall translational action. The purpose of IT news translation is to bring in the latest outside tech news for readers at home. However, this purpose sometimes cannot be fulfilled because of the cultural difference between English and Chinese, and the literal translation may confuse our readers. So the E-C translation of IT news should be conducted under the guidance of Skopos Theory, be in line with the Chinese context and culture, and achieve contextual coherence and intratextual coherence to bring latest tech news to Chinese people as soon as possible. During the process of translation, the translator should first take into account the purpose of spreading information, and express the original text concisely, clearly and accurately, trying to make the target text meet the three requirements of Skopos Theory. Taking this theory as the guideline, this report will explore the strategies for translating English IT news into Chinese.I hope that this report based on my translation project will be of some help for other translators especially in terms of how to produce high quality translations of IT news through taking into account the stylistic features of the text under the guidance of the Skopos theory.
