A Translation Report On E-C Translation Of The Changing Dynamics Of International Business In Africa(Excerpted)

The author(also the translator)translated “Game in Africa: Seizing the Opportunity” from the third part of The Changing Dynamics of International Business in Africa,a book introducing Africa's political,economic,and cultural environment to students,scholars,government officials,and business people,which aims to promote the development of Africa.The chosen chapter is mainly about the macro strategy and specific measures that Game,a supermarket retailer,takes in its expansion in Africa.Applied in the translation practice is Reiss' s text type translation theory,in which diverse texts are classified into three basic text types,namely,the content-focused text type,the form-focused text type and the appeal-focused text type.Three corresponding modes of translating are thus raised: “translating according to the sense and meaning”,“translating by identification” and “adaptive translating”According to the text type translation theory,the source text herein is basically classified as content-focused text,with appeal-focused text elements.Different translation strategies are adopted based on Reiss' text type and corresponding modes of translating,such as transliteration,literal translation and homophonic translation for the appeal-focused text and reorganization,amplification and free translation for the contentfocused text.It is hoped that the author would thus achieve a deeper understanding and improved skills of translation,and that the study would shed some new light on the related translation studies and practices.
